The Bird Feeder

Outside our bay window we have two bird feeders. We love to watch the birds come and fill up on the buffet of seed we provide. Over the years we have noticed more and more species coming into our yard. Perhaps the trees are mature and provide cover, perhaps more people mean more birds for Las Vegas. For the first time ever we have a pair of Robins nesting in trees next to our yard.

Yet as fate would have it, I noticed for the first time some predators flying around the skies above my section of town.

Last week, early in the morning, I heard a smashing sound hit our bay window. Typically it's just a bird thinking the reflection is open sky and suddenly finding itself smacked into reality. This was louder than that. I glanced out the window through the side shade to see a hawk perched above his prey.

It was sad yet exciting. Now in addition to chasing our cat away when she gets hungry for some meat, we have to glance up at the sky for the occasional swooping shadow.

Happy New Year.
