Comments

It is really a risk to put comments on your blog? It seems that some subjects ignite comments that bring about rants or brutal honesty as well as some incredible snippets of comedy. So, along with the pain we get the pleasure. I have read a few national blogs that collect so many comments they have to shut them down. Comments can actually crash servers!

When I get up and start to work I have a pretty set pattern of blog surfing. After a while, I surf past my blog to check to see if anyone has commented on my marginal thoughts. Usually it’s nothing, but I have only recently added comments and I’m a slacker about blogs, so I’m not surprised.

However, someone I know has recently added comments and has equated comments with acceptance. “I don’t get any comments, nobody likes me.” Wow, comments equal love. Hmmmmmmmmm, let’s do some research.

Eszter Hargittai says the definition of a blog is a moving target. This is quite different than love. Although, love can be a moving target too.

Some say blogs with comments make them more democratic, only the author generates the topic. They do allow for criticism and discourse, so comments really make a blog more interactive and maybe more interesting.

Comments allow less control of material presented on the blog, but people who are most engaged with and interested in a post do read the responses from other readers, blomments!

I read another thought on comments. “It always seems a little sad to stumble across a blog with page after page of posts with “Comments (0)” under each one. Even if they do have regular readers, it’s easy for writers to get demoralized and start thinking that the lack of reader-response means that they just don’t care.
Turning comments off allows the pleasant delusion that people would comment if only you allowed them the privilege.” Anonymous

Hey there is that anonymous person showing up again. That person sure stays busy.

So comment away, anonymous, friend or foe. It will either add spice to our lives or frustration to our honesty.

Well said.
I have enjoyed having comments on my blog. I enjoy knowing that people I know and love have another place to discuss things with me. I have never had a negative anonymous comment. It would probably bug the crap out of me.
